overview                     ultralight mid-layer                     eVent shell                     technical info

eVent is a waterproof and highly breathable fabric.

Modern technologies have produced numerous fabrics that can be called waterproof and breathable, but only one came into consideration for our crux climbing shells - eVent. We started using eVent back in the late ‘90s (before it was even launched and while we still working for another major outdoor brand) and were immediate converts.

The breathability of eVent is far superior to any other waterproof/breathable fabric, regardless of the technology used (i.e. membrane or coating). This means that comfort is maximized: perspiration build-up is significantly reduced, keeping you dry on the inside. Equally important for climbers, however, is the fact that you won’t be overheating so much either, minimizing the need to constantly adjust the zip height or take off your jacket altogether.

What is unique about eVent is that it is an air-permeable laminate (others, such as Goretex are not). This means that the air can be pushed through it - important for down jackets when stuffing them away into a full rucksack. But the fabric itself is still completely windproof.

Crux down garments use a 2-layer construction that comprises the outer face fabric and the eVent membrane laminated together. Since the membrane itself is standard for all eVent fabrics, it is the face fabric that determines a garment’s ultimate performance parameters. The fabric we use is by no means the lightest available, but offers three greater advantages - it is by far the most breathable of all the eVent fabrics, at a weight of 80 g/m2 and using 40 denier yarn it is much more durable than fabrics typically used for down clothing, and it has a quiet and soft handle making it pleasant to wear.
